Tectona grandis Nigeria

Nigerian teak in Chennai.

Warmer in tone, faster grown, and priced for work where the quantity matters. Same species, different character.

Nigerian teak is Tectona grandis grown in West Africa, like Benin teak, but it tends to carry a warmer, slightly reddish brown tone. The rings are broad because the tree grew quickly.

It is an honest working timber. It cuts cleanly, it holds a fixing, and it takes a finish without argument. Where a job needs a lot of material and the colour is going to be painted, polished or laminated over anyway, this is often the most sensible timber in the stack.

We grade what we bring in and we tell you which grade your job needs, including the times when the cheaper one is the right answer.

Questions

What buyers ask about Nigerian teak.

How is Nigerian teak different from Benin teak?

Mostly tone. Nigerian teak leans warmer and slightly redder, Benin teak leans lighter and more golden. Both are Tectona grandis from West Africa and both behave similarly in use.

Is Nigerian teak good for door frames?

For internal and commercial door frames, yes, and it is widely used for exactly that in Chennai. For a main entrance door that takes sun and rain, we would point you at Burma teak instead.

Can I see the timber before I buy?

Yes, and we would rather you did. Come to the premises at Madhavaram and look at the actual lot. A log has to be read, not looked up.
