Benin teak in Chennai.
West African teak in long, straight, generous lengths. The sensible choice when the run of material matters more than the last degree of oil.
Benin teak is the same species as Burma teak, Tectona grandis. It grows in West Africa, and it grows faster, so the rings are wider and the colour is a lighter golden brown.
What it gives you in return is consistency. Girth stays even through a lot, lengths run long and straight, and you get far less waste cutting a big job out of it. If you are framing a whole floor of windows and you want every piece to match the last, this is usually the timber that makes sense.
It costs less than Burma teak and does most interior jobs just as well. We stock it because a large share of the work in this city does not need Burma teak, and there is no reason to sell someone more timber than the job asks for.

What buyers ask about Benin teak.
Is Benin teak real teak?
Yes. It is Tectona grandis, the same botanical species as Burma teak. The difference is where it grew, not what it is. Anyone telling you African teak is a different, lesser wood is either mistaken or hoping you are.
When should I choose Benin teak over Burma teak?
When the job is interior, when you need long straight lengths, when consistency across a large quantity matters, and when the budget has to stretch across a whole building rather than one door.
Does Benin teak need more maintenance?
It carries less natural oil than Burma teak, so in an exposed outdoor position it will want a finish looking after it. Indoors, treated normally, it behaves very well.
